Studio News: The Real Ghostbusters To Have The Time Of Their Lives?

The headline was a bit of a stretch, as one of my bosses once said, “It just popped in there.” Gord of TV Shows On DVD.com updates ghostheads with more news of RGB on DVD. The second (third?) party that may be handling the complete series is believed to be Time-Life. Along with The Real Ghostbusters, Slimer & The Real Ghostbusters episodes will be among the 26 DVDs.

No extras or box art have been revealed yet. An official announcement hasn’t been made by either studio.

Studio News: RGB Season Sets?

“Call it fate, call it luck, Karma, whatever. I think we were destined to have The Real Ghostbusters box sets on DVD.” - Dr. Venkman. Ok, Dr. V didn’t quite put it that way. I just about did when we were thinking about adding RGB episodes back to our website. It’s one of those things where you think “something will come out now that I said this or did that.”

The week of April 29, 2008 it almost happened. TV Shows On DVD.com is reporting that “a multi-disc release” is “in the works” for a Fall release. The studio behind the box sets isn’t Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. This other studio wasn’t named.

TV Shows On DVD is a reliable source for upcoming TV shows on DVD. Keep in mind box sets of The Real Ghostbusters hasn’t been announced by S.P.H.E. or any other studio.

Sony will be making a “big announcement” concerning Ghostbusters at San Diego Comic Con. Their has been speculation that RGB box sets could be that announcement.

On a related note concerning possible upcoming RGB episodes on our site. If a final decision is made to show episodes, their will be no download links offered. Legally Ghostbusters International® can’t provide episodes to download. If official sets are released episodes may not be shown here at all. When a decision is made, information will be provided here and on The Real Ghostbusters sub site.

Studio News: Ghostbusters Release Date

On the heels of the studio Ecto-1 on a promotional corporate tour word is that Sony and Vivendi are looking to release both Ghostbusters™: The Video Game and Ghostbusters on Blu-Ray on October 21, 2008.

Could this be the official announcement at San Diego Comic Con regarding the film franchise? Or in addition will the announcement be something else Ghostbusters fans have been waiting for?

Summer can’t come soon enough.

Studio News: ECTO-1 Is On The Road Again

Believe it or not (unless you’ve known Sony did have both ‘59 MMs in the shop for restoration) the Ecto-1 used for filming is on the road again after years of sitting on studio property. Ghostheads had wondered for months why Sony was putting a lot of money into the historic cars. The studio Ecto-1 will be used for promotional purposes (so far corporate) in US cities throughout for at least the next 6 months. No word yet about studio Ecto-1A which may still be in the restoration shop. And mo official touring schedule has been released at this time either.

AJ Quick, webmaster of GB Fans was at its first stop, corporate headquarters for Best Buy in Minnesota. Where he took nearly 300 pictures of the restored Ecto-1. The next stop was Vivendi HQ in Texas on April 18.

Who knows where studio Ecto-1 will be next. There is a 100% chance it will be in San Diego for the San Diego Comic Con the weekend of July 24-27, 2008. While its not officially announced GB Fans is reporting that Vivendi is trying to get Dan Aykoyd and Harold Ramis to appear. I’m sure if asked and Ernie Hudson was available he would attend also.

Merchandise News: Hot Topics

Hot Topic is selling some Ghostbusters merchandise again. First up is our familiar “no ghost” red ringer/white t-shirt. Which retails for $18.00 USD. XXL costs more. They’re also selling for the first time (as far as we know) “no ghost” logo white hooded sweatshirts (hoodies) for $36.00 USD. XXL again costs more.

Studio News: Ghostbusters Score

We’re not really sure what the deal is. A CD club website, Varese is selling the late Elmer Bernstien’s Ghostbusters Score. Which of course was made for Ghostbusters. See, best we’ve known for nearly 22 years the score was never sold offically. According to Varese the score finally makes its premiere. However only 3,000 copies were made.

The artwork looks pretty cool, (not sure why my bosses have a glow around them) we’re really not sure if the score is another burned copy or actually a produced, professional CD. They claim it has “glorious sound.” If anyone has any additional information, please let us know. As a bonus to what’s not included in the original score, this release has 3 tracks that were supposedly recorded, but never released to the original score. From there track listing: 37. Magic, 38. Zool, (yes, they spelled it wrong) and 39. We Got One! (Alternate)

Whether its a burned copy or professional, its still a lot cheaper then what I paid for a copy years ago. Personally its not worth $19.99 USD for new artwork and three short bonus tracks. It might be to you.

Update

I saw a message from Phantomfriar2002 and he’s cleared up whether this score release is official or not. Apparently Varese Sarabande is the only record label that deals exclusively with soundtrack albums. Hopefully if this is licensed as its supposed to be and it sells well, we’ll see more then 3,000 copies made.

Studio News: The (little) kids love us.

In case you weren’t aware by now, (uh we never posted the press release on the site) Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has released 3 volumes (3 separate DVDs) of the classic cartoon The Real Ghostbusters. You can check the press release at Spook Central. They’re not made for the collector, the devoted fans. For reasons that defy logic, (its not all about money in this case as they retail for $6.99 USD each at most stores) S.P.H.E seemed to have released these random episodes so parents can entertain their small children. And if The Real Ghostbusters was still being shown or it was new, that might make sense. While we’re happy if young kids and older kids are watching the first cartoon all the time, when was the last time (prior to this release) you knew of a small child even knowing who we are?

This might be why (yeah ok) S.P.H.E is re-packaging Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II on March 14, 2006 separately, at least in Region 1. We still recommend picking The Real Ghostbusters DVDs up (kids or no kids) as supporting Sony may show them that complete seasons could be worth their while.
